The polls in respect of the Guyana and Regional Elections closed a mere few hours ago. The general view is that it was both technically and administratively well-executed. A progressive Guyana requires committed and responsible leadership at this time and a reassured population.
This letter is an appeal to you, Excellency, as leader of one of the major political parties in Guyana to, in an immediate public announcement:
1) Recognise that the volatile situation that currently exists requires you to exercise outstanding, patriotic leadership;
2) Commit to a public declaration that you will not only accept the result of the elections but also impress upon your supporters the imperative of remaining calm whatever the results;
3) Uphold the commitments made with respect to the Code of Conduct and specifically to section 6 thereof in which you pledged that should your party emerge victorious, it will demonstrate modesty and decorum and commit itself to govern in the all encompassing interests of Guyana;
4) Be guided by the spirit and intent of Article 13 of the Constitution of Guyana, which guarantees that the wellbeing of all Guyanese will be an integral part of the governance process.
We implore you to ensure that in the 50th year of our country’s independence Guyana behaves in the mature manner that befits a truly great nation. If we putGuyana first. Guyana wins.
