GUYANA MEDIA CODE FOR ELECTIONS COVERAGE

 

For Reporting and Coverage of Guyana’s Local Government Elections and General and Regional Elections (2015)

 

FOR OWNERS, PUBLISHERS, EDITORS AND JOURNALISTS INCLUDING ASSOCIATED GUIDELINES

 

 

 

Preamble

 

The media in Guyana will aspire to progressively maintain in a sustained and consistent manner the highest ideals of professional responsibility in the best interest of our nation, recognizing the outcomes of free, fair and peaceful elections  benefit   all Guyanese. Given the desirability for a well-regulated election, the avoidance of aggravating any kind of tension and unnecessary political discord, ensuring that voters make an informed choice:

 

We  agree  and  accept that a Code of Conduct for the Media  on  Elections Coverage, generally respected and observed, will contribute to a free and fair election and ensure the success of this democratic process. The Media is taken to mean newspapers and radio, new media, television and cable stations.

 

We agree to subscribe to, and, to the best of our ability, comply with this Code of Conduct and to take all reasonable steps to ensure its observance.

 

We accept and subscribe to this Code of Conduct on the clear and unqualified understanding that the government or any of its agencies or the Elections Commission will not impose or seek to impose any prior restraint or censorship on any publication by the media.

 

We agree and accept that the salient principles stated in this Code, underlying fairness, balance, accuracy and minimization of harm should at all times guide the practice of journalism.
