Peace and Overwhelming turnout at polling station in District 10 – LINDEN

Linden Region 10 saw an overwhelming turnout of voters that were seen waiting at some polling stations. More than half of the 29,254 electors peacefully completed voting at the 127 polling stations in District 10 by 11: am.

As our cameras moved around to a number of polling stations, there were noticeably empty, and elections staff could have been seen relaxing. Upon inquiring, we were told that more than half of the electors had early. Some voters at the Wismar Christianburg Secondary Mulilateral School complained of the process being slow and wearisome and were becoming verbally hostile to polling staff who maintained their professionalism. At the St. Aidan’s Primary there were orderly lines and people were seen peacefully going about the voting process.

The US Embassy Charge d’ Affairs Kevin Hunt said that the US has 68 observers in nine of the ten regions and he saw 10 Polling Stations and everything is going peacefully. He pointed out that they have to ensure that the elections are happening in accordance with the Guyanese law and that there is no irregularity.

British High Commissioner Greg Quinn said that he visited six polling stations and everything is going as normal. Additionally, the Canadian High Commissioner who was also part of the team said she visited eight polling stations and everything was intact. Also present were Head of the Private Sector Commission Ramesh Persaud and President of the Linden Chamber of Commerce Kevin De Jonge.
